Challenge Details:
· Minimum Size: 36″ x 36″ finished
· Due Date: December 14th Meeting
Challenge Purpose:
The aim of this challenge is to push us out of our comfort zones and dive deep into the world of color experimentation. While monochromatic quilts might initially seem simple, they offer a unique opportunity to showcase stunning pieced and quilt designs through variations of a single color. This challenge is a chance to create a quilt that is anything but boring by using different shades, tints, and tones of one hue.
What is a Monochromatic Quilt?
A monochromatic quilt is one that uses variations of a single color throughout its design. This approach focuses on different shades, tints, and tones of that one color, creating a cohesive and harmonious look. By working within a single-color family, you can explore a wide range of patterns and textures while maintaining a unified aesthetic.
For example, if you choose blue as your single color, you might create a quilt using navy blue for the darkest shade, royal blue for a mid-tone, and sky blue for the lightest shade. The quilt could feature various patterns, such as geometric shapes, star blocks, or appliqué designs, all using these shades of blue. The result would be a visually interesting and sophisticated quilt that highlights the beauty and depth of the chosen color.
Color Terms to Know:
· Hue: The pure color itself, like red, blue, or yellow.
· Tint: Created by adding white to the hue, resulting in a lighter, softer version of the color.
· Shade: Made by adding black to the hue, creating a darker, more intense version of the color.
· Tone: Produced by adding gray (a mix of black and white) to the hue, which decreases its vibrance and saturation, giving it a more subdued appearance.
Inspiration:
This challenge was inspired by Tracy Grosner’s Color Lecture at our January meeting, where she introduced the concept of monochromatic color schemes. Tracy encouraged us to explore the full range of a single color to uncover its potential in quilt design.
So gather your fabrics, select your hue, and start experimenting with its shades, tints, and tones. We can’t wait to see the innovative and captivating quilts you’ll create for this challenge!
Submission:
Please bring your completed quilt to the December 14th meeting for display and judging. Let your creativity shine through your monochromatic masterpiece!
